A brief rundown of the world Sylvain comes from since it heavily influences and shapes the characters within it. The game takes place in a medieval fantasy type world. It's a continent roughly comparable to medieval Europe, inhabited by humans. Magic is a common ability and is used for healing and fighting. Along with horses both winged horses (pegasus) and wyverns are used as mounts. Medieval politics are in full swing, arranged marriages, nobles, etc. On top of the usual politics and class divides, Fire Emblem also throws in the concept of Crests which are basically a special ability passed down from one generation to the next through blood. They're a hereditary trait that children can be tested for and they're highly sought after. Not only do Crests link a person with a famous bloodline, but those who possess a Crest are granted the ability associated with that Crest and are able to wield special, ancient weapons made specifically for a certain Crest. The catch is that there's no guarantee a child will be born with a Crest. They're hereditary, and like anything hereditary, it comes down to genes. As you can imagine, Crests only make politics more volatile and terrible.
Personality:
On the surface, Sylvain seems like a well adjusted, happy go lucky, friendly guy who has a penchant for flirting with anything that breathes. He's the kind of guy who seems to have it all and be friends with everyone, always smiling and quick to crack a joke. He has a natural charisma and seems to possess the aggravating ability of excelling at things seemingly without trying.
The longer one observes or speaks to Sylvain however, the more cracks that appear.
Underneath his easygoing, happy exterior, Sylvain actually has a very dark and cynical view of the world around him and is deeply distrusting of people.
Sylvain grew up in not so unique circumstances for Fodlan. His older brother, Miklan, was born without a Crest, so when Sylvain was born with a Crest his older brother was all but disowned. Miklan, understandably, didn't take this well and subtly tried to kill Sylvain while trying to make it look plausibly like an accident. Sylvain quickly learned that people either pretended to love him because he had a Crest or were deeply jealous and hateful because of his Crest. He also learned that regardless of what he was dealing with, he was expected to act magnanimously and meet the world with a happy facade.
Even away from home, Sylvain is deeply distrusting of people. Outwardly, he's extremely personable and friendly but his relationships, both platonic and romantic, are all shallow. He never quite opens up and lets people in because deep down he doubts that they like him for him, suspecting they like him because he's a noble or because he has a Crest, or both. Despite constantly flirting and being sociable, Sylvain seems to set his relationships up for failure, usually putting impossible standards on them or testing them in ways they can only fail. Because of this Sylvain comes off as an unsuccessful womanizer (which he is). But it becomes pretty obvious that he's viciously self-sabotaging relationships. Unfortunately, it's not only Sylvain who gets hurt by this but also the countless ladies who he's put through the same thing.
The thing is, he is, at times, completely self-aware of what he's doing but is unable to keep himself from doing it. Sylvain is smart and insightful but has poor impulse control, so although he can talk about and assess his actions and see what he's doing is self-destructive and wrong, he can't quite keep himself from continuously falling back into that cycle. He's both frustrated with himself and unable to keep himself from repeating it.
To round out his made-up persona, Sylvain often acts dumb, incapable or like a slacker. He actually has a natural gift when it comes to most things (magic/fighting/talking to people) and tends to pick things up quickly without having to try very hard. He often acts like he's bad at them to avoid praise or being in the spotlight in order for someone 'more deserving and hard-working' to be recognized. Far from actually being selfless, he honestly just doesn't feel like he deserves it. He seems to genuinely want people to think he's terrible and lazy. Again, this might also be because he's trying to sabotage his relationship with them.
His jokes and smiles are a way to avoid actually dealing with emotions. He actually has an extremely cynical and defeatist view of the way the world works and his place within it. He feels like a cog in a bigger political machine, he can see it but he can't escape it, or rather he assumes he doesn't have the courage to escape it. His inability to change the way things are results in brief flickers of genuine anger and hatred, usual towards the system but sometimes towards those who are simply living contently within its confines (like the ladies he dates) and even sometimes towards those who have escaped it.
Overall, Sylvain is a bit of a mess and ultimately is lying to those around him and himself with an easy smile and a self-deprecating joke.
Powers:
Trained in hand to hand and bladed combat including swords, axes and lances though he has a preference for using lances. Horseback, pegasus and wyvern riding though he prefers horseback. He's also trained in magic and has a number of fire spells (which are effective against one target at a range of 1-20 feet) and a healing spell (only effective when standing beside his target and provides something like first aid).
